2017 Fenaughty Syrah, El Dorado

The Fenaughty Vineyard is one of the crown jewels of the Seirra Foothills.  Decomposed granite and volcanic soils lay a sturdy foundation for these vines to grow on their north facing slope.  2017 was the hottest year on record for California and at this particular vineyard temperatures reached 115 Fahrenheit. Scrambling to make the best decision possible we pulled the trigger for a pick the first week of September. The fruit came in as pristine as any other year yet at lower sugars than we would have liked (19brix). Fortunately we had a chance to redeem ourselves. Three weeks after the first pick the area hit a cool spell and we went back into the vineyard and picked another ton, this time at 22.8 brix. These two blending components are the Ying and Yang of what El Dorado wine can be. The first pick leaned on the side of minerality, graphite and pencil shavings with bright raspberry and an abundance of acid. The second pick gave classic savory notes, inky color and a rounder texture.

Bright raspberry/ Pencil shavings/ Olive brine/ Medium weight

The wine was fermented 100% whole cluster with native yeast, unfined and unfiltered
